Determining the proper ratio of prospects required to achieve a gift at a particular giving level is entirely dependent on the strength of the relationships the organization has with its prospective donors. For those organizations that have incredibly strong relationships (think religious congregations), the ratio could be as small as 2:1. For those organizations that have very limited experience in major gifts and very few donors at major gift levels, the ratio might need to be 4:1 or 5:1. The middle of road ratio of 3 prospects for every one gift required at a particular level is common. The gift pyramid or table of gifts is driven by the ratio required to achieve success.
